WHAT’S IN A RUIN? Conserving the Ruins of Ancient Rome

Friday 21 November 2025 at Coton Village Hall (Event Number 2508)

Our speaker, Roland Mayer, Emeritus Professor of Classics at Kings College London, has delved into this question in his recently published book, The Ruins of Rome. He will give us a taste of its wide-ranging coverage.

Rome was the first place where any ruins were deliberately conserved by using a range of novel schemes to bring the originals to a form of life.  Conserved ruins attracted tourists and income.  In the newly formed Kingdom of Italy in the 19C, and later with the Fascists, they played a political role.  Many of us may not realise that what we see today is a reconstruction, yet their influence is around us beyond Rome in art, architecture and literature.
