Friday 6 September, 2024 (Event no. 2407)

Copyright: Stanstead Bury
A private visit to Stanstead Bury, just outside the village of Stanstead Abbots. The property was originally owned by the abbey of Waltham and passed to the Crown at the Dissolution. Elizabeth I granted it to its first owner.
The house is a mix of architectural styles from Tudor to relatively recent, with a fine William and Mary front. It is Grade II listed. Inside is a good collection of art and furnishings accumulated by the family of the current owners over the last 150 years.
The tour includes the walled vegetable garden and the Grade 1 listed church next door where monuments include a stained glass window by Thomas Denny.
Note: there is no lift, upstairs floors are at different levels and the ground between the house and church is a bit uneven. Lunch is not included but do join the organisers at a pub in Stanstead Abbots.
