Drayton House and Lowick Church

Wednesday 17 June 2026 (Event no. 2604)

Described by Nikolaus Pevsner as Northamptonshire’s most impressive medieval mansion, Drayton House is a 14th century crenelated manor house, extended in the 15th and 16th centuries and modernised particularly between 1680 and 1710 and in the 1770s, but little altered since then. Since the 1100s its only transfer has been within the family by inheritance or marriage. It is not ordinarily open to the public.

After the morning guided tour we will take lunch provided by the ladies of Lowick village in the Germaine Rooms (Village Hall).

Then we shall visit the parish church, built by Sir Henry Greene between 1375 and 1400 but seemingly incorporating fine glass from the previous church including a knight bearing a shield of the Drayton coat of arms, c1240. There are some fine 15th-18th century family tombs, and medieval pew ends

There are steps at various points around the house and one room is on the first floor. There are a few chairs where people can sit but the tour is essentially standing/walking.
