Speaker: Mark Knight, Cambridge Archaeological Unit, Department of Archaeology, University of Cambridge – Excavation Director at the Must Farm site.

The chance discovery in 1999 of mysterious timbers in Must Farm Quarry, Whittlesey, set in train archaeological investigations which identified them as part of a Late Bronze Age stilted settlement that had been suddenly destroyed by fire about 850BC and absorbed by the river silts over which it stood.

Mark led the major excavation which took place in 2015 and 2016, producing a wealth of exciting finds.  The site turned out to be one of the most important and best preserved of its age in Europe.

Mark co-authored and edited two volumes about the dig: Must Farm pile-dwelling settlement published in 2024.
